The Century Old History Of Golf Balls
Many people have enjoyed the game, but chances are very few have ever thought about how golf balls came about. The game is centuries old and they have evolved quite a bit through those years. They are regulated and their weight and size much be exact and they are checked regularly.
The first ones were made from wood. In the 17th century they were then made using a leather pouch that was stuff with wet feathers. They were then dried and painted.
Enough feathers to fill a hat were boiled down and then placed in the leather pocket. As these feathers would cool they would distend. The wet leather pocket would shrink up around the feathers making for a very hard and compact ball. Any openings in the leather would be sewn up with stitches.
This design was used for several centuries even though they did have their issues. The cost to create this design was quite costly. It was not possible to make very many of them at a time, which made them harder to come by. They also would come apart if they hit to hard.
Finally, in the mid 1800s a newer design was created. They used the dried sap from a tree which had a rubbery texture. They found it could be shaped when it was hot and accidentally found out that the defects created during the shaping gave the sphere a longer flight. So they began to make the spheres with the dimpling by hammering the defects in.
Next came the rubberized design that were then coated with a outside cover to keep it from bouncing to much. Most of today’s are made of several layers of synthetic materials. They are classified based upon the number of layers that are used in the golf balls. They now have many different designs to suit every player’s need.
